Use Grammarly to write emails in Perfect English

Hey Heroes!

Not everyone has to communicate in a different language, but if you work with partners overseas, especially with countries that don’t have your native language as their own, you are forced to use a common language and it is usually English. In this globalized world, the more you promote and try to grow your business, the more you come across situations where you have to communicate in English, at least in written form.

This poses the problem that the person you are talking with might also not have English as their native language, so both of you are communicating in a “neutral” language and this can make the exchange prone to misunderstandings.

How do you minimize this issue?

The first tip is: keep your communication short and simple. Use common words, straight to the point, assertive and direct.

Second tip: as the receiver, be mindful the other person might not be fluent in the language, so don’t take things personally and if there is something that you are not sure of, clarify immediately.

Third tip: Use a tool (or tools) to simplify writing in English. If your English level is intermediate or basic, you can use Google Translate first and check the translated version for mistakes. If you are still unsure, this is where Grammarly comes in.

Grammarly is a writing assistant in the form of an app or add-on, that corrects your messages in English in several services, including Gmail, Outlook, Twitter, Facebook, google docs, and others. Not only will it correct your grammar and spelling, but it will also make suggestions on style, tone, and synonyms.

It comes in a free and paid version. While the free version checks only spelling and grammar and lets you know how “readable” your message is, the paid version includes style suggestions and tone and formality-level checker, meaning it will detect inappropriate tone (like informal words if you are writing a formal document) and non-inclusive language. This can be a game-changer for writing your CV or a proposal to a customer, so depending on your English level and interactions, consider going for the paid version for your company.

If you have an intermediate to advanced English level but you still want to sound more fluent, I recommend downloading the add-in and using the free version when writing emails, it certainly is useful!

If privacy is a concern, Grammarly encrypts your documents using 256-bit AES & SSL/TLS. This means that Grammarly doesn’t get to see the content of your documents, which means that you can use it with work-related or personal documents.
